If you have a passion for style, creativity, and making people look and feel their best, pursuing a career as a barber might be the perfect fit for you.

In this blog post, we will guide you through the steps to becoming a licensed barber in the state of Texas and share some insights about the journey ahead!

Step 1: Research the Requirements

Before embarking on your journey to become a barber in Texas, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the state’s licensing requirements. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) oversees the regulation of barbers and sets forth specific guidelines. These requirements typically include completing a barber training program, accumulating a specific number of training hours, and passing both written and practical exams.

Step 2: Enroll in a Barber Training Program

To kickstart your career as a barber, you’ll need to enroll in a reputable barber training program. Our barber program is 1000 clock hours and is designed to provide you with the skills required to excel in the industry! Through hands-on practice, demonstrations, and classroom study, you can learn about various techniques such as:

  • Shaving
  • Shampooing and rinsing
  • Haircutting male and female
  • Barbershop management
  • Mustaches and beards
  • Facial treatments
  • Razor cutting
  • Salesmanship
  • And more!

Step 3: Prepare for and Take the Licensing Exams

After completing your training hours, it’s time to prepare for the licensing exams! The TDLR administers both a written and practical exam to assess your knowledge and proficiency in barbering. Adequate preparation, such as studying the barbering curriculum and practicing your techniques, is essential to succeed in these exams.

The Written Exam

A 70% is required to pass the exam and you will have 90 minutes to complete! The written exam will test your understanding of various topics such as:

  • Licensing and Regulation (8%)
  • Sanitation, Disinfection, Sterilization, and Safety (29.5%)
  • Hair and Scalp Care (4.5%)
  • Haircutting and Hairstyling (14%)
  • Hair Coloring (10%)
  • Chemical Texture Services (12%)
  • Nail and Skin Care (4.5%)
  • Shaving (17.5%)

The Practical Exam

The entire exam is 3 hours and 29 minutes long and a passing score is 70%. The practical exam will evaluate your technical skills, including:

  • Pre-Examination Set Up and Disinfection – 10 minutes
  • Manicure – 22 minutes
  • Professional Shave – 42 minutes
  • Blood Exposure Incident – 12 minutes
  • Facial – 17 minutes
  • Haircutting – 37 minutes
  • Blow Drying and Thermal Curling – 22 minutes
  • Chemical Application Preparation – 10 minutes
  • Permanent Wave – 17 minutes
  • Single Process Color Retouch – 10 minutes
  • End of Examination Disinfection – 10 minutes

Step 4: Apply for Your Barber License

Once you have successfully passed the licensing exams, you can apply for your barber license through the TDLR. The application process typically involves submitting the required documentation, such as proof of completion of training hours, exam results, and a completed application form. Be sure to follow the guidelines provided by the TDLR and meet all the necessary requirements to avoid any delays in receiving your license.

Step 5: Continuing Education and Career Growth

Becoming a licensed barber is just the beginning of your career journey! To stay updated with the latest trends, techniques, and industry advancements, it’s crucial to invest in continuing education. Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance your skills and expand your knowledge base. Additionally, consider gaining practical experience by working at established barbershops or salons. This will not only sharpen your skills but also allow you to build a solid client base and explore opportunities for career growth.
